I love fruit.  Fruit is delicious.

I eat some pretty much every day.  I almost always have an apple at lunch, and I sometimes also have a banana in the morning.

So that’s a two fruit minimum right there, and usually I eat more than that.

Inference Time!

Eating fruit helps me to be and feel healthy, and my body definitely notices when I don’t give it enough fruit.   I can tell when I need to eat more fruit when things aren’t flowing smoothly

I also like pears, pineapple, strawberries, and grapes.  And cantaloupe.  And lots of other fruits.  Most of them, in fact.

One of the great things about fruit is that there are so many different kinds.  Have you tried a loquat?  What about a rambutan?  Cherimoya?

I promise I’m not making up words, those are real fruits, and they’re delicious.  If you haven’t tried them, you’re missing out.

Story Time!

I used to eat lots of loquats at my grandparents’ house when I was a kid.  It was fun seeing who got the most seeds inside.  Sometimes there were two, sometimes three, but four was definitely exciting.  And of course, the fruit itself tasted really good.

Rambutan

Rambutan, a.k.a. Mamon Chino

Rambutan is something I first tried in Costa Rica.  However, they refer to it as “Mamon Chino”.  It doesn’t look like something you would want to eat, but it’s less intimidating than it looks.  And it also tastes good.

My mom used to make smoothies all the time when I was growing up.  She’d make smoothies with all sorts of different fruits.  And frozen fruit is great, because it adds texture in addition to the flavor.  They were great on hot days, or after sports practice.

Fact Time!

There are plenty of health benefits to eating fruit, but lots of other people have already posted information about the relevant nutrition.  So rather than getting technical, I will share a few neat facts.

Did you know that eating an apple in the morning is more effective at waking you up than a cup of coffee?

Did you know that a banana is nature’s energy bar, and gives you sustained energy (without a spike and a crash)?

Did you know that kiwis have more vitamin C than oranges?

Did you know that pineapples contain bromelain, which can act as a natural anti-inflammatory?

Pretty nifty, right?

Fruit Time!  Wait, what?

A lot of fruits are portable, which is really nice when you’re in a rush.  With some large exceptions (I’m looking at you, melon family), you can hold a fruit in your hand and take it to eat on your way.  Easy eating, easy cleanup.  Done.

You can get good fruit at Costco, or at stores like Sprouts.  Even Ralph’s or Albertson’s will have good prices now and then.  But fruit is definitely something that is pretty much always in our house, wherever it comes from.

You can eat fruit whole, sliced up, mashed up, blended — however you want to eat it.  Because there’s no wrong way to eat a piece of fruit (or maybe I’m confusing that with peanut butter cups).

Song Time!

To inspire you to eat more fruit, I have composed a song.

To the theme of ‘Call Me Maybe‘:

I saw a pear in the bowl,
It ain’t sliced, yeah it’s still whole
I reached my hand but you stole
It and you’re gonna pay

I’d trade my plum for a pear,
Berries and limes if you’d dare
I know you aren’t one to share,
But now you wrecked my day

Your hands are dirty
Fruit thief, this ain’t purty
Pears don’t help with scurvy
Where you think you’re going, stealer?

Hey, I saw it first,
And this is crazy,
Just give me my pear,
And I’ll be friendly!

I think you can imagine how the rest of the song goes.

Ending Time!

The point is, fruit is good.  I like fruit.  You should like fruit too.

I just ate a giant apple.  Earlier I had watermelon and some pineapple.  And grapes.  Have you eaten any fruit today?
